Aisha Buhari canvasses empowerment for girl child

The empowerment of the girl child is important to the wife of the President, Mrs. Aisha Buhari. She has urged the Nigerian Institute of Management to intensify efforts towards empowering the girl child, particularly in ensuring that female children in Nigeria are educated up to the secondary school level.

Aisha Buhari also called for the passage of girl child education bill by the National Assembly and urged women across the country to come together to make this a reality.

Buhari spoke at the 2016 Women in Management and Leadership Conference organised by the NIM in Abuja recently.

She said, “I urge the institute to do more in this direction by galvanising women nationwide to consider putting a bill together on the education of the girl child to the National Assembly for consideration and passage. The bill should make it compulsory for every girl child to attain at least secondary school education.

“This will, of course, be facilitated by the government through free education policy. Everybody in this gathering would agree with me that education is the key to the liberation and empowerment of the girl child. Education changes the outlook of a person and drives away poverty of the mind and pocket.”

Buhari, who was represented by the wife of the Governor of Nasarawa State, Mrs. Mairo Almakura, stated that an educationally empowered girl child of today is the woman professional of tomorrow, adding that when a girl child has basic education, she will be in a better position to fight for and claim her rights whenever they are infringed on.
