Nigeria loses 10,000 women to unsafe abortion yearly
Having unsafe abortion is not good for women. A non-governmental organisation, Ipas Nigeria, said that the country loses no fewer than 10, 000 women annually as a result of unsafe abortions.
The Country Director, Hauwa Shekarau, who made this disclosure recently at a three-day event on capacity building for media practitioners on women’s sexual reproductive health and rights in Gombe State, called for a robust advocacy to reduce unsafe abortions in the country.
She said Ipas was concerned about expanding access to safe abortion and contraceptive care across Africa, Asia and Latin America, while working with partners to train abortion providers and connect women with vital information.
She said “Since 2006, we have trained over 1,000 journalists who are helping in championing the course of women reproductive health and rights issues in the country.”
Some of the participants at the workshop commended the organisation for exposing them to issues that could shape their thoughts and reportage of issues relating to women’s reproductive health and rights as well as maternal deaths in the country.
What is unsafe abortion?
It is the termination of a pregnancy by people who lack the necessary skills, or in an environment lacking minimal medical standards, or both. For example, terminating a pregnancy may be an extremely dangerous life-threatening procedure that is self-induced in unhygienic conditions.
It is a significant cause of maternity mortality in the world. Most of them occur where abortion is illegal or in developing countries where affordable well-trained medical practitioners are not readily available, or where modern contraceptives are unavailable.
Unsafe abortion contributes to estimated 8-18% of maternal mortality and is one of the leading causes of maternal mortality. About one in eight pregnancy-related deaths worldwide is associated with unsafe abortion. It can lead to some health risks that can affect the well-being of women. The major and most life-threatening complications that stem from unsafe abortions are infection, hemorrhaging and injury to internal organs.
