5 things you shouldn’t say to someone mourning a loved one

1

Dear Nigerians, there are some things you shouldn’t say to someone mourning a loved one. Don’t be insensitive!

Overtime, I have noticed that some people are so insensitive to people who have lost their lost ones and under the guise of sympathizing with them, these people say terrible things.

I heard a story of a woman who lost her husband five years after marriage. She has two children. Her husband had an accident on his way to the village and died.

It was a heartbreaking story. I felt so bad when I heard it. The woman was pregnant when he died but lost the baby due to shock. She was hospitalized for a week after her husband’s death.

When I went to visit her, I saw her screaming at some people. She walked them out of her home and warned them to never come back. It was unusual but when I heard what they said to her, I supported her action.

How can you visit a woman who suffered two losses and tell her that God is not happy with her and that maybe she made a vow to God and didn’t redeem it?

5 things you shouldn’t say to someone mourning

Is the punishment for not redeeming her church vow the death of her husband and unborn child? Why do some people hide under religion to talk carelessly? Are these people God to know why such a tragedy befell a woman in her early thirties?

Dear Nigerians, if someone is mourning, don’t tell them these five things:

1. Don’t tell them not to question God. If someone’s loved one dies in their prime or in a gruesome manner, they have every right to question God. You are not God.

2. Don’t tell someone mourning that God knows best. You people should keep God out of your insensitivity. Are you saying God allows people to die because it’s his best for their loved ones?

3. Don’t tell someone drowning in the pain of losing a loved one who left home and didn’t come back alive that they should stop crying as if they have no hope. That’s insensitive.

4. Don’t tell them how to mourn. Leave the person alone to mourn however they feel. They are the ones feeling the pain of losing a loved one, not you.

5. Don’t tell them that they didn’t pray enough or didn’t fast enough or that God is angry with them because they didn’t redeem their church vow. Don’t be wicked!

You people should stop it. Stop hurting people who are mourning and grieving with your insensitive words. They might not forgive you for that. Adults should be sensible and talk with wisdom

If you don’t know what to say to someone grieving the loss of a loved one, silence is a better option. Visit the grieving family but keep quiet.

May the souls of the departed rest in peace. May anyone mourning a loved one be comforted.
