One of the unfortunate things about being a woman in Nigeria is how other people tell you how to live your life.
It’s like you are not the owner of your life with the way people control your life to their whims and caprices.
From childhood, you are told what to do so that you can marry a good husband. As a teenager, you are commanded to stay away from boys to avoid unwanted pregnancy.
As an adult, you are hounded to go and get married. Some parents and family members take it a notch higher by banning ladies from coming home until they find a suitor.
The unfortunate thing is that boys don’t get raised this way. They are let loose to be themselves, live life on their terms and explore their sexuality.
It is unfortunate that these parents are raising good girls for bad boys. Nigerian women and girls should be allowed to live their own lives and not what society expects of them.
Someone wrote this post and I agree totally with him. Enough is enough!
“Perhaps, one unfortunate aspect of being a woman from Africa or more specifically, Nigeria, is that your whole life and existence is a script written by other people.
It appears the Nigerian woman is expected to live like a character in a movie produced by other people – parents, society, malignant traditions, stereotypes etc.
The moment she tries to live a conscious life, all hell would let loose against her.
As a woman you are expected to live according to the whims and caprices of everybody around you, which might include phallus-wielding teenagers.
What exactly is the purpose of life, if you cannot decide how you want to live your life?
I do not wish to be a woman in this clime, because being a fulfilled woman here, means you must be willing to swim against the tide.
You cannot conveniently makes choices except they are fully endorsed by the powers that be.
You need permission to marry the man of your choice, to marry when you want to marry, to eat what you want to eat, to have sex when and with whom you want to, to choose a career, to dress the way you want to dress etc.
It is no surprise that a large percentage of women in this clime don’t have lives. They just exist.
You can choose to be a slave all your life or rebel against those who have carved moulds for you to fit into.
It is your life. How you live it is entirely up to you. There would be a backlash, but in the end you get to be who you want to be. Nothing is more fulfilling.”
