Chloë Sevigny on getting pregnant at 45 and dealing with ‘daunting’ mom guilt

Chloeë Sevigny is learning to deal with the guilt that comes with being a working mom.

The indie darling, 47, and her husband, Croatian art gallery director Sinisa Mackovic, welcomed son Vanja in 2020. In a revealing new interview, the actress says she’s learning how to deal with mom guilt.

“I could cry just thinking about the fact that I’m a damn actress and my career has to pay our mortgage,” Sevigny told the Sunday Times.

“I mean, I can’t complain. I’m very privileged, but there is something enviable about the nine-to-fivers when you have a kid. I’m trying to navigate the mum guilt, but it’s pretty daunting. I haven’t been for a massage in two years and when I go on the table I’m instantly thinking, oh my God, is he OK? Has he fallen over? Is he going to be hit by a car? My friends are, like, ‘This worrying isn’t helping any of us, Chloë.’”

Sevigny was 45 when she became pregnant with Vanja, her first child. Speaking to the Sunday Times, the American Psycho star shared how she realized she had hit “now-or-never time” and might be unable to conceive without intervention.

“I dreamed my whole life it would be a natural occurrence,” she shared. “Now that it seems like it has to be forced, it takes on a different connotation.”

Having recently celebrated her wedding with Mackovic — who were officially wed in 2020 — Sevigny has opened up about how her family life has made her consider which roles she takes.

“I don’t want to go back to Italy for four months, with Vanja, without Sinisa. It’s so disruptive,” she told the New Yorker in 2020. “And I’ve been doing this since I was 19. I don’t want to say I’ve had my career, and I’m sure it’ll continue, but I have to really rethink my choices now.”
