A hockey enthusiast in New York found out the meaning of the word “mortified” the hard way.
During an NHL game between the Islanders and Panthers, he decided it would be the best time to go down on one knee for his girlfriend in a cute but very public marriage proposal.
The woman, however, said no and ran away, much to his chagrin. The incident was highlighted by the Kiss Cam in the stadium as onlookers roared in amusement at the heartbreaking event.
To make matters worse, this event happened in front of in front of 17,255 spectators on the first night of the Islanders’ NHL season against the Florida Panthers.
The man in question took off his shirt and he had the words “Plz say yes yes yes” painted across his chest. The mystery woman complied after a group of admirers chanted “just say no.” She held the man’s hand and said a few things before running away, leaving him speechless.
This all happened while Bruno Mars’ ‘Marry You’ was blaring through speakers, which he thought would be enough to convince her.
There is no conformation if the woman returned to her seat but the man was seen slumped in his seat, with a beer soon after the embarrassing moment, as per the Daily Mail.
Some Netizens suggested that the whole event was planned and hoaxed on social media. New York Islanders later posted a picture of the incident with the caption, “Did she say yes or no? #IslesNation needs to know.” Ouch is such an understatement.
The video of the incident has gone viral on Twitter. In response to the video, a person wrote, “I feel like unless your girlfriend specifically tells you her dream is to be proposed to at a sporting event its always a terrible idea.”
Another one shared, “I was at that game with my son. He was scarred – says he will never propose in front of an audience.” One user joked, “It’s his fault that they scored.”
