Kim Kardashian is all laced up at the Met Gala once again. The 42-year-old reality star returned to the red carpet for Vogue’s glitzy 2023 gala on Monday, making an entrance in a corseted Schiaparelli gown draped in strands of pearls.
The iconic Chanel pearls is what I always thought of so we wanted to just be dripping in pearls,” she told Vogue on the red carpet, adding that her daughter North West gathered some of the gems that fell off prior to hitting the steps.
However, it wasn’t the only pre-Met Gala help she received from her famous family, noting that she “took a shot before I came with my sisters.”
“I just wanted to feel glamorous, I really didn’t feel the pressure,” she added of getting dressed for the “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty”-themed occasion.
Complementing the pearl-strand draped gown, the Skims mogul swept her brunette strands into a sleek updo for the occasion.
The gem-covered look sparked social media comparisons to the 2007 Playboy shoot where she posed in nothing but pearl necklaces, with one Twitter user writing, “#KimKardashian giving playboy #Metgala.”
Kardashian made her Met Gala debut in 2013 on the arm of then-boyfriend Kanye West and while pregnant with the couple’s first child.
At the time, she was memorably cropped out of Vogue’s red carpet coverage and criticized for her floral Givenchy gown, which drew comparisons to a dowdy couch on social media.
But she’s since become one of the annual event’s most anticipated arrivals, having gone viral year after year in looks ranging from a gold chainmail Atelier Versace gown in 2018 to a tightly corseted Thierry Mugler mini in 2019 to a face-obscuring black Balenciaga getup in 2021.
Most recently, she borrowed Marilyn Monroe’s iconic “Happy Birthday, Mr. President” gown to wear to the 2022 gala.
She sparked backlash for losing 16 pounds in just a few weeks to fit into the museum piece and for allegedly damaging it during the night (Ripley’s Believe It or Not!, which loaned Kardashian the look, denied it was harmed.
