Jennifer Lopez cites reason for divorce from Ben Affleck, wants to drop his last name

55-year-old Jennifer Lopez and ‘Jenny From The Block’ singer filed for divorce from husband Affleck, 52, on Tuesday (August 20).

The soon-to-be former couple’s split comes two years after they tied the knot in a small, private ceremony in Las Vegas on July 16, 2022, and then again at a luxurious wedding party in Georgia on August 20, 2022.

The ‘Let’s Get Loud’ hitmaker submitted the papers herself in Los Angeles County Superior Court and listed April 26, 2024, as the date of separation, as reported by TMZ.

According to Page Six, Lopez listed “irreconcilable differences” as the reason for her split, with a source telling PEOPLE: “She tried really hard to make things work, and is heartbroken…

“The kids are a top priority, as they always have been.”

The documents reportedly state that both parties must share financial information, which includes their current income, expenses, properties, and debts. The singer will have 60 days to carry out this action, and the Gone Girl star will have a further 60 days.

TMZ sources also alleged that the former couple does not have a prenuptial agreement in place, which means earnings from the past two years could be deemed community property during the divorce proceedings.

Furthermore, it has been reported that Lopez requested that the Academy Award winner’s surname be dropped from her name in the filing, changing her legal name from Jennifer Lynn Affleck to Jennifer Lynn Lopez.

She also indicated that she did not want her nor Affleck to be awarded spousal support.

The end of “Bennifer” comes as a shock to many fans who were excited about the couple rekindling their romance after calling off their relationship early in 2004.

Lopez and Affleck – who started dating after starring together in the 2003 movie Gigli – got engaged in April 2022 and then held a surprise wedding in Las Vegas three months later.

The Hustlers actress shared in a December 2022 cover interview with Vogue that she was “proud” to be Mrs. Affleck and opened up about her decision to legally change her last name.

“We’re husband and wife. I’m proud of that. I don’t think that’s a problem,” she said at the time, adding that “people are still going to call me Jennifer Lopez,” however, her “legal name” would be “Mrs. Affleck because we’re joined together”.

The star also revealed her soon-to-be ex-husband engraved a heartbreaking message on her engagement ring after he proposed for the second time in April 2022.

The design, an 8.5-carat radiant-cut green diamond with two half-moon accent diamonds set on a platinum band, had the words “not.going.anywhere” engraved on it.

“Because that’s how he would sign his emails when we started talking again,” she explained to Apple Music One’s Zane Lowe. “Like, ‘Don’t worry, I’m not going anywhere.’”

Awkward because Lopez was the one to end the marriage on the anniversary of the couple’s second wedding ceremony.
