Kenneth Mitchell, actor best known for his remarkable performances in Star Trek: Discovery and Captain Marvel, has sadly passed away.
The actor, who had bravely battled amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), passed away at the age of 49 on Saturday (February 24).
The heartbreaking news was shared by Mitchell’s family via his X account.
“With heavy hearts we announce the passing of Kenneth Alexander Mitchell, beloved father, husband, brother, uncle, son and dear friend,” the tweet read.
Born in Toronto, Canada on November 25, 1974 to Diane and David Mitchell, Ken was widely known as an actor in many films and television shows,” the tribute read. “He’s portrayed an Olympic hopeful, an apocalypse survivor, an astronaut, a superhero’s dad, and four unique Star Trekkers.
“But to those close to him he was known as a hope seeker, daydreamer, dream believer, soccer player, beach walker, bear hugger, landscape designer, garden grower, canoe paddler, happy camper, nature explorer, cat lover, infectious laugher, gift giver, note sender, movie goer, art maker, music listener, sports connoisseur, detailed particular, Leafs supporter, world traveler, uncle joker, younger brother, Susan’s partner, and more than anything else, a proud father.”
Renowned for his versatility and talent, Mitchell made significant contributions to the Star Trek franchise, portraying memorable characters that resonated with fans worldwide. From the formidable Klingon warrior Kol to the compassionate scientist Aurellio, Mitchell’s performances captivated audiences across multiple seasons of Star Trek: Discovery and Star Trek: Lower Decks.
In fact, the character of Aurellio – who used a hoverchair – was introduced to allow Mitchell to still be able to perform amid his battle with ALS.
Reflecting on his iconic roles, Mitchell once shared with Syfy: “Working on Lower Decks is… the last time I remember walking before having to be in a motorized wheelchair.” Despite his physical challenges, Mitchell’s dedication to his craft never wavered.
The official Star Trek website has since posted a tribute to the actor.
In addition to his stellar work in television, Mitchell’s talent shone on the big screen, notably in his portrayal of Joseph Danvers in the 2019 MCU movie Captain Marvel, in which, he portrayed the father of Carol Danvers.
While Mitchell’s professional achievements were significant, it was his unwavering spirit and kindness that truly defined him. Despite facing adversity, Mitchell remained a beacon of positivity, touching the lives of all who knew him.
The actor is also known for his roles on the television shows Jericho, The Astronaut Wives Club, Ghost Whisperer, and Switched at Birth.
In honor of Mitchell’s memory, his family has established a GoFundMe campaign to support ALS research and provide for his loved ones. As of this writing, over $20,000 has been raised.
