Single mum sends two daughters to Ivy league US Universities on full scholarships

A Nigerian single mother who survived domestic violence is thanking her stars for her prompt decision to leave Nigeria with her two daughters 13 years ago.

The woman, Joy Nnenne shared the news of her second daughter being offered admission into three Universities on full scholarship after her first daughter cruised into the university under similar circumstances.

She wrote:

“Cornell University ✅
Pomona College ✅
Williams College ✅

With a heart full of pride and gratitude, I’m pleased to announce that my baby, Amara Karen Janice Chiedu, has been offered spots in the number one liberal arts university in the country Williams College, the number three liberal arts college in the country- Pomona College and Cornell University, an Ivy League university in the state of New York. All on full ride scholarships.

It all started when an ordinary woman decided to “take the bull of life by the horns and ride on the backs of her misfortune.”

I vividly recall that Saturday morning when I arrived the shores of the United States with three huge suitcases, two huge eyed girls and one huge dream. Thirteen years later, I look back and it’s all come full cycle.
I couldn’t take all of this credit even if I tried.

 

My profound gratitude goes to God for blessing me with two wonderful girls, to Amara and Ketandu for making my job easy.

Not one single day in our history was I ever summoned to their school for bad behavior- not one! Not one day did I attend a counseling session designed for troubled teenagers. Not one! Not one day did the police come to my door to help me pacify an unruly teenager. Not one!

I’m deeply proud of Amara for her hard work and perseverance. It’s not easy being the little sister of a high achiever.

If anything, she recognized early on that their strengths were on two different ends of the spectrums. While her sister’s strength was in the math and sciences, she, on the hand, dominated in liberal arts.

I’m grateful that I never had to deal with sibling rivalry or toxic competition of any kind. While Ketandu was the one I would go to if I’m struggling to couple a newly purchased contraption, Amara was the one I would turn to if I’m trying to make sense of an abstract sentence.

My work is done. My joy is complete. And nothing else matters to me right now except that my Amy will be joining her sister in the big club. She will be attending an Ivy League university in the fall.”
