Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala’s sister becomes first black woman to win the Physician of the year award in the US

Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala’s sister, Dr Njideka Udochi, has been recognized as the family doctor of the current year in the United States.

She was accorded this honour just at the time her sister assumed office as the first female head and first African to lead the World Trade Organization.

Udochi, a medicine graduate from the University of Nigeria, with over 33 years of experience in the medical line becomes the first black female winner of the reputable award.

The family physician, according to Nigeria Abroad, is the founder of the Millennial Family Care and was recognized as the top doctor by Baltimore Magazine in 2019.

The Maryland Academy of Family Physicians usually recognizes members that do exceedingly well as far as the tenets and ethos that guide family physicians are concerned.

Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, in a tweet she made earlier today, hailed her sister for her care for COVID-19 patients and for saving lives. Ngozi said she was proud of her.

Her tweet said:

“Congratulations Dr Njideka Udochi, Maryland’s Family Physician Of The Year. Thank you for your care of COVID-19 patients and for saving so many lives. Proud of you my sister.”

The Maryland Academy of Family Physicians (MDAFP) announced recently that Njideka Udochi, MD, MPH, FAAFP of Glenelg, MD, is the recipient of the 2021 Family Physician of the Year award in recognition of her exemplary service, and engagement in the wellbeing of her patients and community.

MDAFP represents over 1,600 dedicated family physicians, residents, and medical students throughout the state.

MDAFP presents the Family Physician of the Year award to recognize a physician who provides outstanding service to patients and their communities with compassionate, comprehensive and caring medical service on a continual basis, all while demonstrating balance between career and family.

Dr. Udochi has been practicing family medicine at Millennium Family Practice for over 16 years, where she serves as Medical Director and Chief Executive Officer.

She was a 1998 graduate of the George Washington University Medical Center/ Holy Cross Family Practice Residency Program.

Dr Udochi also completed a fellowship in Geriatrics at the George Washington University Medical Center in 1999.

As an experienced HIV provider with Board Certification since 2004, she carries the designation AAHIVS.

Dr. Udochi is a practicing full spectrum family physician. She is currently  the President of a consortium of multi-specialty Physicians providing care to patients using a PCMH Model, which ensures improved access, quality and  outcomes.  She also provides care to children, adult and geriatric patients from over one hundred and fourteen countries spanning six continents in a private practice in Columbia Maryland.

She is very passionate about reducing health disparities and works in collaboration with a multispecialty group of providers to address inequities in healthcare in her community.

Dr. Njideka Udochi says that she is extremely honored and humbled to receive this award and she will work to continue to uphold the wonderful tenets of Family Medicine.
