Emmy Rossum to star as Spider-Man Tom Holland’s mum in new series

Shameless star Emmy Rossum is joining Spider-Man‘s Tom Holland in his new Apple TV+ anthology series The Crowded Room – playing his mum!

Entertainment Weekly reports that the actress, who is less than 10 years older than Holland, will play Candy, the mother of Holland’s character Danny.

Her character details read: “Through their struggles in life, she dreams of salvation in the form of someone else,” with EW noting that it’s unclear whether or not Rossum’s scenes are opposite Holland or flashbacks.

The 10-part series is adapted from Daniel Keyes’ biography The Minds of Billy Milligan while also blending in shades of screenwriter Akiva Goldsman’s own life.

The series will explore the stories of inspiring people who have mental illnesses.

Earlier this month Mamma Mia actress Amanda Seyfried was cast in the series as a clinical psychologist named Rya, who faces the most challenging case of her career.

Speaking of Seyfried, this role opposite Holland may be one of her only chances to work with the actor, as she previously stated she’d never do a superhero movie.

“I’ve really had to push against it. I get it. I think superhero movies are wonderful, and you can be transported to this incredible world that doesn’t exist. And it’s really good for kids, I think, as they’re getting older,” she told Associated Press last year.

“But I have no interest in being that physical, and being that much of a trip to my imagination every day. I’m not a fan of green screen. I’m just not.

“I want to have fun when I’m working. And so that has been that cloud that’s been looming over me for my entire career, and I don’t know when it’ll ever go away. But it’s okay because at the end of the day, my agents trust me and they know that it’s not for everybody.”
