Popular Nigerian human rights activist,Aisha Yesufu has given her opinion on marriage, its longevity and divorce.

Reacting to the news about Patrick and Iretiola Doyle’s divorce, she stated that the focus of marriage should be the happiness of the couple and not longevity.

According to her, people should be comfortable with divorce and understand that they can go their separate ways when the marriage no longer worked out and be happy.

Aisha Yesufu tweeted:

“We should learn to be comfortable with divorce. The longevity of a marriage should not be the prize. The prize should be happiness, fulfillment and mental well being of the couple involved. Where it is no longer optimal, people can decide to go their separate ways and be happy.”

If you wonder, is it better to divorce or stay unhappily married, know that divorce is not the first choice anyone makes. It is after a lot of thoughts and attempts that fail to resurrect the marriage that a person or a couple decides to divorce.

So, if one thinks that if a divorce is better than being unhappy, it is most likely true to a great extent. The consequences of staying in an unhappy marriage is that if one is not happy in marriage, they will not be able to put anything positive in the marriage or relationship and it will only get worse.

One good thing that could come out of a divorce is when one of the parties involved in a divorce can recover dreams that they had to put on hold during the marriage. This recovered dream may be a new lease on a dream job, or it could mean a need to travel can now take place that could not while married to someone else.

In my opinion, getting a divorce is better than dying in a miserable marriage.
