A Nigerian lady has said that she regrets sacrificing her school fees for her ex-boyfriend when she was still in the university.
The young lady who looked sad while disclosing her biggest regret in life during a street interview stated that she gave him the money she was supposed to use to pay for her own school fees.
According to the young woman, that action is one that she regrets till today because the relationship still ended even after she sacrificed her school fees for a man.
She went on to say that she later dropped out of school as she couldn’t pay her tuition because of the same young man.
The sacrifices women make for men are always romanticized. Everywhere you turn, there are many examples of how women from the old generation kept their lives on hold for the sake of men and the family.
This celebration of sacrifices is especially done to shame women today, who are not ready to adjust. They get criticized for being selfish and prioritizing their needs and desires.
In Nigeria, women are indoctrinated with the idea of sacrifice from childhood. They are told that a woman who sacrifices for her man, is the one who will be rewarded with marriage and the good things of life when the man becomes successful.
Even in marriage, women who are willing to sacrifice their careers and money making ventures are celebrated by men and the society but men are not told to do the same for their wives.
Families live off the sacrifices of women. Men build their careers and get to the top on the back of their women who stand back and support them until they make it while their dreams and desires take the back seat.
But why is sacrifice a parameter for being labelled a good woman in our society? Why can’t a good woman be the one who will never settle for less and one who goes after her dreams and future?
It is important for women to stop making sacrifices for men that will derail their lives. A woman shouldn’t sacrifice her education or business just to keep a man by her side.
In most cases, these actions backfire and these women regret giving up so much for the men they are in relationships with.
